Dropping An E One The 'Bay

Well, it doesn't happen too often, oddly, but I noticed that one of the old Jookies is up for grabs on ebay earlier, and it is definitely one that brings a smile to me mush.

I don't know if you remember The Old E One, but it was one of my favourite single 'bucker Strats, with a nice Gretsch filter'ron being the bucker in question.

I thought at the time that this was one of the nicest rusted iron finishes I'd done, and I haven't change my mind looking again.

On the road again...

Bye Bye Old E...

Well, The Old E One is travelling south to it's new home, so once again I'm Jookyless, and feeling inspired to get my act together.

Although, of course, I've fitted the new maple neck on The Fabulous One and just need to get that set up and fettled and see how it looks. I decided in the end to go for the Horseshoe tremolo, so I've removed the tailpiece and moved the Strap pin back into the middle, which feels better as far as my little-known-OCD goes.

Obviously I gave it a bash with  a hammer for good form too. You can't get too carried away about it all, of course. So once the trem arrives, it will be pukka and sorted. Lovely.

Hopefully that will be finished this week, which is nice.

Other than that, I've sourced all the bits 'n' bobs for The Betty Blue One, so it is just a case of waiting for them to show up and I still need to grow-a-pair and rout the neck of The Fallen One as that is pretty much ready to go otherwise too.

So basically, it is the same as last week, with one less guitar to trip over and a few more parts to wait for.

That Was The Week...

Well, as it happens, I never got any further with anything much at all, but finishing The Old E One feels good as it seems sooo-very-long since I actually completed something. Or so it feels, anywasup.

I am in a bit of a state with balls in the air all over the place and I'm not really sure what will happen next. Mr Mojo is sending the TV Jookies for The B Movie One, so that will no doubt be do-able-ish next week.

In fact whichever one I do manage to finish next will be my fiftieth Jooky Guitar, which I find a little hard to credit.

I still haven't really found a good answer to the question of why I make them, other than because it is fun and all and because I want to make a guitar for me. Which might sound silly as I never keep them, it has to be said.

But despite my golden rules about having to sell them once they are made, I have a sneaky hope that when the music stops and I give in and do something more interesting instead, I'll be left holding my ideal guitar and that I can keep it.

What that ideal guitar is, I really don't know so I guess I'll have to keep stumbling along until I find it.

So for next week, The B Movie One, vinyl scratchplates, T Shirts and nothing at all new until I catch-up a bit.

Oh, there is The Ronin One - it seems Allparts have finally found me a bridge and that should be here soon. So that might be something else to play with too. And I need to put the veneer on The Betty Blue One too. So again, I'm losing myself in the fog. Ho hum.

Introducing: The Old E One

Well, in one of those desperate end-of-week flurries of conscience, with the weekend's fetid breath up my sporran, I got my finger out this morning and did something other than drink coffee.

Firstly, I finished lacquering the top of The Betty Blue One. This will get a veneer next week (assuming I can fight off my 'but it looks nice as it is' self-demotivation) and I'm thinking all may well be cool with baby blue.

That only took a few minutes, so whereas I'd normally claim that as a days (weeks) work, I kept my finger on the pedal and pulled the trigger with by foot flat to the floor, and generally got on with The Old E One.

So may I introduce to you, my latest trick... She is an alder bodied Strat with a quite scarily beautifilled rusted finish.

Maple/rosewood neck and all the rest of the bobbins.

The pickup is a lush Gretsch 'bucker and to keep things simple, a volume knob.

And as to how it sounds, well when I used the matching neck pickup in The BDSM One, I was well impressed and this one is equally so. Loads of twangy cleans - almost Tele-like in truth - but yet with a bit more of the dirty stuff it just purrs. And as I just treated myself to an old Tonebender, it sounds stunning thru that. If I can find meself a cowboy hat, I'll be Texan Flooding in all bar name, birthplace, accent and oil.

Oh, and talent.

So in summary, I'm well pleased.

As for the rest of the day, well, Betty will be damp until the new week, so looking at my to-do list for this week, I'm light on a scratchplate for The Raymond One and a Haut D'Jook T Shirt. I'm still thinking about that, but I think a bit of a trial is in order.

Sold: The Old E One

The Old E One is dedicated to a ramshackle pub that is probably no longer there. It is smothered in rust and looks aged beyond it’s years, and is of course a complete one-off.

Here in Jookyland we’ve always loved out single pickup Strats, and the Gretsch humbucker in this gives a great collection of tones, from beautiful crisp cleans all the way to full on fuzz. Simple to use it still has a lot going on and a beautifully quick neck means that you can make the most of it.

The finish is of course one of our classic rusted iron jobbies, where an active iron paint has been tortured with a home brew concoction of noxious gubbins, before being stabilised and then lacquered. The effect this gives is almost 3D and varies between fire and a beautifully figured wood, depending on your perspective and the light hitting it.

To be clear, The Old E One is an utterly unique guitar, and there will never, ever, be another made. It is signed and numbered, entirely hand built and finished cooler than a slo-mo run across the pebbled beach at Portishead. There will genuinely never be another guitar like this and past experience suggests that it won’t be around for long.

Plonking Together: The Old E One

Well, a bit of a finishing day all-in-all today..

I've started to lacquer The Travellin' Man One, and am rather pleased, chuffed and generally made-up that the rustification of The Old E One is complete.

The fotos are a plonk together of course, but it looks nice to me and to be honest, love you though I do, I am particularly selfish in this way. Yet, ironically, so giving in others. Either way, I like it, so that is that.

With a bit of luck then, I'll get it together proper-like tomorrow and be twanging the night away.

As for The Betty Blue One, well, the top is corroding as I type. That will then get a lacquer or three before being attacked with my walnut burr veneer and generally it will no doubt descend into all manner of Bosch-like angst, but there we are.

That will be one for next week I fear. Can't be clamping over the weekend, who knows where things will end if you start clamping of a weekend.

So from my original start-of-the-week-wish-list, I just need to make a scratchplate and do a T Shirt and I can feel the warmth of fulfilment beneath my bosom. And what more can you ask for in life?

I must admit I'm still trying to get my head around what to do with the T Shirts, on one hand it would be easy to print a foto of a guitar, but then it's a bit of a so what kinda thing. On the other I can think of lots of other ways to make such a delight cool and creamy, but don't really know whether it would surive a washing machine or not. Never had to worry about that before. I guess a bit of a trial is in order, so that is the plan tomorrow.

Rustifying The Old E One - Part Uno

Well, in my usual manner I seem able to cock things up without even trying. I came to pack The Fabulous One away in it's shiny new case, and unfortunately they sent me one for a big ol' jazz box, so my thinline baby was just balancing precarious-like on the neck rest like a see-saw.

Ho hum.

Elsewhere, things are simpler... You probably think it looks as though it has snowed, but under the gunk is the front of The Travellin' Man One as the back is pretty much complete (all bar the lacquer). I should have taken a foto of that, of course, but there we are. Too late now.

I've also started on the rust-fest that will be The Old E One, though I've just realised that I forgot to remember to think about starting to rust the scratchplate too. This is going to be a whole mess of corrosion with a Gretsch bucker to break it all up. And maybe strings and a bridge too, but you can't have it all.

After The Storm

Something Seedy, Something Dirty New

Well, yesterday was a bit of a write-off, but it is paisley time today and there we are. The Craps Dice showed up - which look ridiculous yet cool, and will go well with The JoBo One I think.

Being slovenly did however give me some ponder time, and letharic of brain though I be and I know it is kinda my default setting, but I have *that* yearning again, the one where I make a single pickup Strat.

I'm not really sure why, but they are the only Strats I seem to like a lot of the time and there is something that just feels pukka about single pickup guitars. Maybe I'm just too lazy or indecisive  to use a switch, I don't know, but there we are. It is one of those, I just can't decide which.

Anyway, I have some bits 'n' pieces including my shiny Gretsch Humbucker, which I've been keeping like a shell in a pearl for just such an occasion, and I'm a bit excited at the prospect, it has to be said. I'm always the same, I get down to one guitar to play and then make another and then it goes mad - kid-in-sweety-shop style and I end-up with lots again and get all uber excited and well, talk a lot of rubbish really.

Anyway, back to the Strat and I want to do it completely in rusted iron, but I want to try something a little different with the finish and maybe another with a twist or two, not sure yet.

I'm going to dedicate it to a pub I went to a long time ago in Bristol so this will be The Old E One. If you ever went there, you'll be knowing what I mean.

Other than that I decided to drop the price on The Fabulous and JoBo Ones to £399 delivered in a hardcase as well, basically, why not.
