Groovy Finishes

Jooky Finishes

We realise that most guitar makers will think of their work in terms of guitar body shapes. Products, if you will. Here in Jookyland, we kind of work backwards and think more in terms of how they are finished.

As all of our guitars are one-offs, the finishes for us are the key to what we think of as Jookiness, and over the last few years we have developed a number of cool ways to make our guitars look ultra groovy.

Paisley
In the beginning, a lot of our guitars were finished in paisley fabric. This looks fantastic and goes with our whole shabby yet chic approach to guitar making. As it happens we got a bit bored of this, but still will roll out the fat quarters for a special occasion.

Paper
To date we have only ever used a paper finish once, and whilst it is our most requested finish we probably won't do one again. Check out The Beano One to see what this looked  like.

Leaf
Nothing looks more opulent than a Gold Leaf finish on a guitar. Putting it over a nice stain and then distressing it, only gets better. To date we have used a variety of leaf, some pure gold or silver, others have been variegated ersatz gold, all of them are pretty stunning thank you very much.

Time Stained

One thing we don't do is relics as lets face it, much as we love them it is hardly new territory. Probably the closest we get is our Time Stained finish which aims to make a guitar look like it has been chopped from Old Wood with the finishes being based on something out of the ordinary, like drift wood, old barrels and my Gran's knackered old table.

Rusted Iron

Our rust finishes are opulent in their tawdriness and almost 3D under the stage lights. To get these, we mix finely ground iron powder with a light acrylic, apply it to the guitar body and then attack it with some horribly noxious gubbins so that it starts to rust. Not just look rusty, but really corrode in all it's beautiful orange and brown.

Of course there is more to it than that, and we can do both rusted (so that it is fixed for all time) or rusting so that it will continue to corrode but not leave you looking tango'd as you play your guitar.

Corroded Copper and Bronze

The approach to both of these is the same as with the rusted iron, apart from that we use bronze and copper powders. These again can give some fantastic finishes, and we'll often use both together as, well, it looks really cool.  Nuff said.

Mother of Jooky

This is a recent development and involves many, many and many more layers of especially mixed paints that give an opalescent finish to the guitar. We've not seen anything like this elsewhere and are a little bit smugly chuffed with them.

There are others too of course, and mixing some of the finishes can look amazing. Check out the Lulu One with it's corroded copper leaf allowing a beautiful paisley to peep thru.
